Small rakes Grassley on spending

By JONATHAN ROOS
REGISTER STAFF WRITER
October 23, 2004

Democrat Art Small challenged U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley's reputation
as a
fiscal conservative Friday in a televised exchange between the two
candidates.

Small, a former legislator from Iowa City, said the Senate Finance
Committee
chairman has been in a position of power at a time when the federal
government
has been ringing up record deficits.

"He has voted for all the spending, and he has voted for all the tax
cuts,"
Small charged. "We have the largest deficits in American history, and I
think
it's time to call a halt to this."

Grassley defended tax cuts that he said have helped the nation climb
out of a
recession. He said the Republican-controlled Congress is working to get
spending under control after the Clinton years, but the nation has to
spend
more to fight terrorism and secure Iraq.

"When you go to war, the budget deficit is not the most concern. The
most
concern is putting the resources behind the men and women that are on
the
battlefield," Grassley said on "Iowa Press," a program on Iowa Public
Television that will be shown at noon Sunday.

Small derided Grassley's efforts to secure federal money for an indoor
rain
forest planned in Coralville. "I think it's a stupid project," Small
said. "I
don't know of anybody who was really pleading for that type of thing."

Grassley defended the $180 million Iowa Environmental Project, saying
it will
enhance education, the environment and the state's economic development.

"It's all about kids," Grassley said.

Small, a retired businessman, lawyer and college teacher, faces huge
obstacles
in defeating Grassley, who is seeking a fifth term. The Republican
incumbent
has enjoyed high job-approval ratings in polls and has an enormous
fund-raising
advantage over his Democratic challenger.

Small rejected the suggestion that he's a token Democratic opponent. "I
frankly
think I'm running a good campaign."

Small complained, however, that Grassley isn't addressing the issues,
as shown
by ads Grassley is running to stress his work ethic. The Democratic
candidate
cited one commercial in which his Republican opponent is shown mowing
the lawn
with three mowers attached.

"He mows his lawn. Wonderful!" Small said. "I used to have a route
mowing
people's lawns. I'm happy now to have a bed of hostas, and I don't have
to mow
the lawn."

Grassley called himself "a hired man for Iowa" who is serving the state
well
with his experience and clout in Congress, and who has a reputation for
rooting
out fraud and waste. "With this seniority, I will be able to do more
for Iowans
in the next six years."

Small said Iowa voters should question that claim: "He has great power,
but what
has he done?"

Most big spending "flows from policy decisions and not saving 50 bucks
on a
hammer, or things that (Grassley) is noted for," Small said.

Grassley rejected Small's contention that he is influenced by the
acceptance of
campaign donations from pharmaceutical companies and other special
interests.

"My principle of campaign contributions is to accept money that's legal
with no
strings attached," Grassley said. "I don't think there's any evidence
whatsoever that because I accept campaign contributions that I make any
commitment" to a donor.

Small, who served in the Iowa Legislature from 1971 to 1986, said he
won't take
contributions from political action committees.

JCDems press release

Co-Chairs of Affirmative Action Committee

The Johnson County Democratic Party is outraged by Republican Sheriff
candidate Steve Snyder’s use of a racial slur. We are equally dismayed
that the Johnson County Republican Party continues to support Mr.
Snyder financially and otherwise. Mr. Snyder’s remarks are contrary to
all community standards and completely unacceptable. The people of
Johnson County deserve candidates, elected officials, and political
parties that respect and protect the rights of every member of the
community, regardless of age, gender, income, sexual orientation,
ethnicity, and race.

Though Mr. Snyder is critical of the current lack of diversity in the
Johnson County Sheriff Department, his remarks make it clear that he is
far less sensitive to the issue than he would have our community
believe. Many good people believe that the day of racially motivated
traffic stops and beatings has passed. As long the “N-word” slips from
the mouth of a candidate for Johnson County Sheriff, that day has not
passed. There is still much work to be done.

We do not blame the Republican Party for Mr. Snyder’s words, but we do
hold them responsible for failing to adequately address his racist
remarks. The Republican Party was given an opportunity to address this
matter before it was made public. Rather than take action concerning
Mr. Snyder, they chose to distance themselves from the source of the
incriminating DVD, as if the cameraman somehow forced Mr. Snyder to
make his remarks.

Mr. Snyder cannot offend the people of Johnson County like this and
expect everyone to forget it because he apologized. The slate is not
cleared; this is not a done deal. What he and the Republican Party
fail to understand is that racial slurs and other offensive remarks
tell the community that, “It’s okay to use offensive words as long as
you apologize.” It is not okay. It is not acceptable. This is one
time that “sorry” is not good enough.

Poll has Leach below 50%

FRANKER WITHIN STRIKING DISTANCE

New poll finds voters unhappy with Jim Leach and with the direction of
the nation

A recent poll shows David Franker, Democratic nominee for U.S.
Congress in Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District, closing in on
Congressman Jim Leach.

A Bannon Communication Research poll conducted September 24th and 25th,
shows Leach below the 50% mark, which traditionally signifies a safe
incumbent.  Leach leads Franker 46%-32% with a fifth (22%) of the
electorate still undecided.

“This clearly shows Jim Leach is vulnerable and that the voters are
ready for a change,” said Maureen Meyer, Franker for Congress campaign
manager.

The poll also showed that well over half of voters in the district are
unhappy with the way things are going today.  55% of voters feel that
things in the United States are moving in the wrong direction and only
33% feel things are moving in the right direction.

“Voters are unhappy right now, and they have a right to be.  They
should be able to expect a congressman to work vigorously to represent
their interests and values in DC, while also working to protect and
improve the building blocks of their lives, like their jobs and their
healthcare,” said David Franker.

Only two-fifths (46%) of voters believe that Jim Leach was doing a good
job, over half (54%) either have negative opinions or no opinions on
him.  In addition, less than half (46%) of voters believe Leach
deserves re-election.

“We clearly see all the warning signs of an embattled incumbent,” Said
Brad Bannon, President of Bannon Communications Research.  “When people
are unhappy about the direction of the nation and don’t clearly feel
their Congressman is doing enough to represent their needs, they vote
for new leadership.”

The details of the poll are below.
