E. Set feasible and efficient timelines for all goals.

LDG Generally

The next LDG big meeting is December 10th @ 2pm

@ ICPL Meeting Room A. We’ll continue our

face-to-face outreach to communities of difference and

at events of difference. We’re inviting people difference

to the JCDem Barbecue on Sept 24th. We’ll be approaching

Exec about reduced or free tickets to outreach groups and

talking to John Deeth about LDG link on JCDems web site.

Affirmative Action Plan

We’re moving along. Our goal is to have a first draft to discuss

by our August 17th A-Team meeting. Jenn Hemmingsen is

doing research as to other documents. James and Jeffrey will

be consolidating these ideas into a draft. We will likely be

presenting this plan at the November Central Committee Meeting.

Communities Of Difference Outreach
We’re moving forward. With our December 10th LDG meeting,

we can be more concrete in our outreach. Communities

to which we are outreaching include 3rd Party Outreach

(left of Democrat), Business/Professional Group Outreach,

Disability Outreach, Faith Based Outreach, Low Income

Outreach, and Race/Ethnicity Outreach. A-Team members

have volunteered to lead/assist with particular types of outreach.

James or Jeffrey is assigned to provide support and/or

accompaniment for each community to which we are

outreaching. Are there other communities of difference to

which we should be reaching out?

Stephanie Williams is leading our Faith Based Outreach

efforts. The plan is to invite the leadership of different faiths

to Round Table Discussion August 17th @ 7pm @ ICPL (after

the A-Team meeting). More information will be available on

the listserv within the next week. We will also gather input on

what should be in Affirmative Action plan. The idea of a regular
(monthly/quarterly) newsletter for LDG events was raised.

This idea is still very new, and we’re working out the details.

Fundraising/Publicity Ideas

This is still very new. We spent some time brainstorming about

using neighborhood level fundraising & publicity as a means of

engaging communities of difference. We would invite JCDem

fundraising co-chairs to get involved with our local efforts.

Things such as bake sales, eating contests, poetry contest, tea

parties, red hatters as fundraisers?, talent show, karaoke,

sleepathon, essay contests with a banquet, personal meetings

with money people, monthly leadership workshops, charity

work for churches, school supplies drive, scholarships,

candidates of difference fund, hosting an event at the art

gallery downtown, linking fundraising to particular events

of difference, the A-Team hosting a fundraising dinner/

banquet in January or April/May with a major speaker.

We also discussed developing a graphic identity for the A-Team

for items such as t-SHIRTS, buttons, & stickers.

Supporting Local Democratic Candidates

We unanimously decided that James and/or Jeffrey will

write a letter on behalf of the JCDems Affirmative Action

Committee to each Democratic candidate for elected position

in Johnson County (partisan and non-partisan) inviting each

person to participate in LDG and offering non-financial

support for their campaigns (envelope stuffing, door knocking,

telephone calling, etc). The letter will request that we be

added to their campaign team so that we can keep the A-Team

apprised of opportunities to help. These letters will go out as

candidates file the petitions necessary to become to official

candidates.

Human Rights County/City Effort

Patti Fields is attending the Human Rights County/City

meetings, and reported that there was a small meeting

Monday July 18, 2005. Becoming a Human Rights County

means that Johnson County recognizes or adopts a specific

standard of equality. The majority of cities in the county

must come on board. The group has a funding application

deadline of Monday August 8th. After preparing their grant

application, there will be events to educate community members

about what it means to be a Human Rights County. A county

wide election will follow.

Proposed Resolution as to Johnson County Human Rights Ordinance
We unanimously agreed to propose a resolution the

Central Committee in support of the Human Rights

Ordinance. A rough draft of the resolution is below.

The final resolution will be published on the JCDems

listserv and will be presented for a vote at the September

8th Central Committee meeting.

Whereas, a functioning democracy depends on

equal treatment and protection of all citizens and;

Whereas, such protection is a cultural asset that

far outweighs any economic liabilities;

Whereas, Iowa Civil Rights Law does not protect

against discrimination on the basis of sexual

orientation and gender identity and;

Whereas, local citizens are working toward the

establishment of a countywide Human Rights

Ordinance which would protect against such

discrimination;

Whereas, the proposed language of the Human

Rights Ordinance is “It shall be unlawful to

discriminate in employment, housing, public

accommodation and credit against anyone

because of age, color, creed, disability, marital

status, national origin, race, religion, sex,

sexual orientation or gender identity.”

Therefore be it resolved that the Johnson County

Democrats supports the establishment of such an

ordinance and urges Johnson County to enact such

an ordinance, calling upon all elected officials within

Johnson County to actively support a human rights

ordinance which would protect all members of the

Johnson County community, the

The Second District Workshop and Dinner is coming up soon, Saturday,
August 13. The program is impressive -- the workshop incorporates a
number of interesting training tracks. In addition, a reception will be
held following the workshop. The workshop is nearby at the West Liberty
Community Center, just off Hwy 6 in W. Liberty. It would be great if
Johnson County Dems were well represented!

In the evening there will be a fundraising dinner, featuring the
announced Democratic candidates for Governor (and then some!) The
dinner is $40 a plate, proceeds will be used by the 2nd District
Central Committee to further the Democratic effort.
