Two Announcements

from Dave Redlawsk <redlawsk@ix.netcom.com>

Democratic Friends,

First, DON'T FORGET TO VOTE FOR DAVID LOEBSACK! What's that? You wonder how you can vote for David NOW? Well, DFA is sponsoring a vote to determine who will get their first endorsement and the funds that come with it. Anyone can vote NOW for their favorite Congressional candidate. The top ten in the first round go on to a second round to determine the winner.

Right now, David is in 6th PLACE -- Yesterday he was in 3rd. If you haven't yet voted for David, PLEASE DO SO NOW at this link: http://tools.democracyforamerica.com/housevote/. And FORWARD this link to everyone you know who might support David. Winning this endorsement could make a huge difference in our effort to unseat Jim Leach.

On another note, this is also a reminder of LUNCH WITH DEMS, this Friday (9/16), noon - 1pm at Tony's, on Burlington Street, Iowa City, next door to Thai Flavors. We'll be in the back room. Our special invited elected officials this month are Regenia Bailey and Terrence Neuzil. Join us for good conversation with no speeches (dutch treat, of course)!

A Chance to Vote for Loebsack!

Friends,

Our friend and Congressional Candidate David Loebsack is seeking an endorsement from Democracy for America (DFA). Their endorsement process includes voting by visitors to their website. The voting begins tomorrow (9/13). Please read the following email that was sent to David (and other Congressional Candidates) and consider supporting David.

Dave Redlawsk

------------------------
From DFA:

Dear Congressional Candidate,

Thank you for applying for a Democracy for America endorsement. We help elect fiscally responsible, socially progressive candidates to all levels of office -- from school board to the United States Senate.

Earlier this year Democracy for America endorsed Paul Hackett for Congress in a special election in Ohio. We sent an email to our supporters urging them to contribute online to Paul's campaign and we reiterated the request through the Democracy for America website and blog. The response was this: over $90,000 in online, small dollar contributions to Paul Hackett in just 3 days. This money helped Paul go on the air days before his special election. He finished just four points from a victory in one of the most Republican congressional districts in the country.

Democracy for America wants to do the same for your congressional campaign.

Next week Democracy for America will host an online vote to determine which congressional candidate will receive our first 2006 DFA-List endorsement. The vote will be open to all challengers and open seat candidates. The candidate with the most votes at the end of balloting will receive a DFA-List endorsement and a national email appeal from DFA's Chair Jim Dean. We can't promise the same return as Paul Hackett's email produced, but this is an easy way for your campaign to gain national exposure, recruit online activists and raise much needed resources to get your campaign off to a strong start.

The voting will take place in two stages. First, we will hold an online vote to narrow the field of 30+ candidates that have applied for DFA's endorsement down to 10 candidates. We will then hold a second round among those 10 candidates to determine our first 2006 endorsement.

The voting for each round will last for five days (Tuesday-Saturday) and is open to all visitors to www.democracyforamerica.com. Safeguards will be in place to assure one person-one vote. Jim Dean's email appeal will be sent to DFA supporters on behalf of the top candidate during the week of September 27th.

Voting URL: http://www.democracyforamerica.com/housevote (Note: The vote will start on Tuesday, 9/13)

To fully take advantage of this opportunity, I urge you to consider creative ways to encourage your supporters to vote next week. Democracy for America is committed to winning back the United States House and we are excited about raising your campaign the resources to win. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have about this opportunity: cwarshaw@democracyforamerica.com.

Sincerely,

Chris Warshaw
Political Director
Democracy for America

Commander in Chief

From: Marisue Hartung <mhartung@iawf.org>

There is a new television show beginning this fall called Commander-In-
Chief staring Geena Davis in the featured roll as the first women
President. The story line is that she is elected as the Vice President
and after the election the President has a stroke. The "male leaders of
the party" tell her to resign as she was just on the ticket for show and
they of course don't think she can do the job. She does not resign and
thus the TV show.

I don't usually promote TV shows but we at the Iowa Women's Foundation
think this show, especially the premier episode on September 27 at 8PM
on ABC, offers a great opportunity to create some visibility on women as
leaders, in politics and in power. This is an opportunity to bring
women across the age spectrum together to talk about these issues and
ways to get involved. It certainly fits into Iowa's Agenda for Women
and Girls in which one of our four target areas is Political Power.

Iowa Women's Foundation exists to expand opportunities and promote
positive social change for Iowa's Women and Girls.
For every issue on the national agenda-from violence to health
care-there is a dimension specific to women. There are few social
problems that can be resolved without programs and strategies that
specifically address the needs of women and girls. Women's issues
involve the entire community. When a woman is given an opportunity or
when a girl can take advantage of an expanded range of positive choices,
entire communities benefit.

Our idea is to have women and girls gather in a home or comfortable
setting to watch the premier episode, enjoy some snacks, good company
and participate in a discussion after the show (sort of like the Oscars
or Supper Bowl gatherings but with a bit more focus) We have at least
one "house party" scheduled and made some contacts in other communities
that look promising and I would like to ask you to consider hosting a
watch party in your home.

If you are interested in hosting a party on Tuesday September 27 at 8:00
PM we can provide you some tips on hosting a house party, questions for
a discussion following the show, and envelopes for a "hat pass" for Iowa
Women's Foundation.

After all raising funds for social change for women and girls in Iowa
may turn this "fantasy" TV show to a reality!

News from the Chair

Hello, Democrats!

It is great to be back in Iowa City after a three month absence. Gary, Riley and I return refreshed, renewed, and enlightened from our visit with friends and relatives in Europe. Below are several pieces of information that JC Dems will find useful and interesting.

Hurricane Katrina

At the suggestion of Carol Porch, Jeff Fields and others the Johnson County Democrats have decided to respond to in a tangible way to the needs of our southern brothers and sisters. The Central Committee voted to have all of our net profits from the door ($10.00 individual and $25.00 family) at the JC Dems Barbecue (Hills Community Center 4PM Saturday September 24th ) will go to hurricane victim relief. Gina Schatteman, the outstanding barbecue coordinator, will lead a group of Dems in determining the recipient(s) of our contribution. Because of the generosity of our Central Committee it is more important than ever to have generous sponsorship of the event. Host money will stay with the JC Dems to elect Democrats that have TRUE compassion for the poor. Consider giving a $100.00 dollar contribution and more if you can afford it. Please contact Gina at iowadem@hushmail.com for more information.

Barbecue Volunteers

Gina and her committee need your help! We need volunteers to work the day of the barbecue in order to have a successful event. Use the email above to commit to a shift. Its fun to get there a little early or linger a bit after, talking and laughing with other Democrats while setting up tables or sweeping the floor.

Minette Doderer Tribute

Our party, community and the state of Iowa lost a champion on August 12th. Minette will be honored in an informal tribute from 3 to 4PM just before our barbecue. Thank you to Gary Sanders for this suggestion and to Kathy Kern and Rod Sullivan for planning the tribute. Please come early and prepare a story or thought to share. It is the hope of the JC Dems to honor Minnettee year round with the Minette Doderer Fund. Last year we gave over 5 thousand dollars to state legislative candidates; please consider a contribution to this fund in her memory.

Public Power

At our September Central Committee meeting the Johnson County Democrats voted to remain neutral on the Iowa City Public Power referendum vote on November 8th.

Strategic Planning

The October Central Committee Meeting will be dedicated to finishing up our strategic planning process. We will conduct no official business. Jason and Melanie Friedman have received over 3,000 surveys asking for input from Democrats and our partners. With a plan in place we will be able to focus on our broad goals with greater efficiency and direction. The Friedmans have dedicated hundreds of hours to leading us in this effort and should be thanked by every Democrat they meet on the street!

March in the Homecoming Parade

Our outstanding 2nd Vice Chair Brian Flaherty is looking forward to our biggest presence yet! The parade is Friday September 30th and the theme is “Hawkeye Fever….It’s Contagious!” Line up begins at 3, please be to our spot by 5:30. Parade starts at 5:45. Contact Brian at brian@iowaforhealthcare.com. Or 400-2821.

Finance Committee

The JC Dems Finance Chair Pat Vunderink needs your help. Your contributions, yes, but also your time to plan events and raise funds. The great thing about this committee is that it is FUN! You can let your imagination run wild. A party at your house, a Jazz Concert at the Mill. How about a football related event? Please email Pat at pat-vunderink@mchsi.com.

New CC Members

The Affirmative Action Committee, under the leadership of Jeff Fields and James Moody, has been doing a phenomenal job recruiting new and diverse Democrats to serve on the CC. We have many CC members who haven’t been to meetings in months. If you recognize yourself in this description, consider resigning your membership to allow someone else to serve. It doesn’t make one less of a Democrat to resign; there are many ways to contribute to our great party. If you have not been attending meetings, why not renew your commitment? In the JC Dems Constitution and bylaws missing 3 meetings in a row without letting us know, or 4 in a year, leads to automatic suspension. Please call 337-VOTE with your intentions or email Membership Chair John Deeth jdeeth@mchsi.com or Secretary Jennifer Hemmingson jennifer.hemmingsen@gmail.com.

Thank You

A big thank you to Brian Flaherty and David Redlawsk for their leadership in my absence this summer.
