County Victory Party

From: "Sarah Swisher"

The Johnson County Democratic Party will host the Election Night
Victory Party at the First Ave. Club in Iowa City starting at 9pm.
Because the election is expected to be so very close we will not begin
the celebration until 9pm...we need all volunteers on the streets or
phones unitl 8:59.

We also urge all campaigns to join in this one big party with a sense
of unity.  Candidates will all have the chance to speak to press.

Electoral tie - what if?

Choosing a new Congress for Kerry...
Why Iowa needs a fresh voice

Know what happens if Kerry and Bush tie, 269 to 269 electoral votes? (That's a likely possibility considering the closeness of this race.) Answer: the newly elected U.S. House of Representatives chooses who will be the next President of the United States.

If elected to Congress, Democrat Dave Franker would vote for John Kerry. Republican incumbant Jim Leach would vote for George Bush.

If that's not enough to convince you that Iowa's Second Congressional District needs a new Democratic voice in D.C., then take a look at "The Record" (below) and see how Franker and Leach differ on key issues.

The Record:

Republican Jim Leach is protecting...

  • Unfunded Mandates - Leach voted for “No Child Left Behind” in '01, then later the same year voted against appropriations funding for it. The Republican House leadership that Leach voted for (Tom DeLay and Dennis Hastert) is not interested in reform.

  • Drug Companies - Leach cast the deciding vote that allowed the Medicare “Modernization” Bill to pass 216-215 (6/27/03), making it illegal for the U.S. government to negotiate lower prices on prescription drugs.

  • The Bush-Cheney Military Agenda - Leach voted for the $87 billion for Iraq without requiring an exit strategy to bring our soldiers home (10/17/03 and 10/31/03). Then he voted against full pension and benefits for our veterans (11/6/03).

  • The Wealthiest Two Percent - Leach voted for the Bush-Cheney ‘04 budget that under-funds public schools, veterans, and the environment, in favor of tax breaks for the wealthiest two percent.

  • Oil and Gas Industries - Leach voted for the Bush-Cheney energy bill giveaway to big oil and gas (11/18/03).
Democrat Dave Franker is working for...

  • Iowa’s Children - Dave has been an educator for nearly two decades at the K-12 and college levels. He recently finished a term on the Iowa City School Board. He also spearheaded efforts to bring the first Head Start program to Cedar County.

  • Iowa’s Seniors - Dave urged Congress to reject the Bush-Cheney-Leach ‘03 Medicare “Modernization” in favor of a plan that would truly benefit seniors - a plan that would NOT be a costly payoff to drug companies at taxpayers’ expense.

  • Iowa’s Veterans - Dave served as chaplain for 16 years at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City. He is against pre-emptive war and was NOT afraid to speak out against going to war with Iraq even when it was unpopular to oppose it.

  • Iowa’s Workers - Dave participated in rallies for the Penford employees on strike in Cedar Rapids. He has championed the effort to equalize health benefits between school administrators and the faculty and support staff.

  • Iowa’s Environment - Dave's school board initiative is bringing the first high performance “green” school to Iowa.

Leach on Rumsfeld and Cheney

From frankerforcongress@yahoo.com Tue Oct 26 23:57:22 2004

Leach: Rumsfeld and Cheney both have "high integrity" and "I'll vote
for Bush-Cheney in event of Electoral College tie."

Johnson County DEMS:

During last Thursday's Channel 9 debate between Democrat Dave Franker
and Republican Jim Leach, in response to Dave's call for Secretary of
Defense Donald Rumsfeld's resignation and Dave's call for Vice
President Dick Cheney to sever his financial ties with Haliburton, Rep.
Leach said the following, "Don Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney are both men of
high integrity."

Integrity?

Then on Iowa City PATV "Live and Local" last night, in response to a
question from moderator Gary Sanders, Mr. Leach said that, in the event
of an Electoral College tie at 269-269 between Sen. Kerry and President
Bush, that he, Leach, would cast his vote in the U.S. House of
Representatives, to select Bush-Cheney as president and vice president,
even if 2nd district of Iowa voters had cast more ballots for
Kerry-Edwards than for Bush-Cheney (not mentioned today in the Iowa
City Press-Citizen but reported in the Cedar Rapids Gazette).

Independence?

If we want change, we must vote for change.

Franker for Congress
