Franker/Leach debate, CR 9/18

From: Franker for Congress Campaign

2nd district Democratic Congressional candidate Dave Franker will
engage Republican Rep. Jim Leach in a joint public forum/debate
Saturday, September 18 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in the Iowa Room of the
Kirkwood Community College campus in Cedar Rapids.

The public is welcome and the format will consist exclusively of
questions from the audience after opening statements and before
concluding statements. Please come and show your support for our
Democratic candidate for Congress.

Dave has called repeatedly for the resignation of Secretary of Defense
Donald Rumsfeld. Republican Rep. Leach rejects that call, labeling that
"political piling on" and stating that "there is probably no one in
America that is more discouraged with the direction of American foreign
policy" than Rumsfeld. [Cedar Rapids Gazette, August 26, 2004]Rumsfeld
hired Leach as a staffer over 30 years ago when Rumsfeld was an
Illinois Congressman.

The list goes on: Medicare "Modernization," support of working men and
women, pension reform, women's reproductive rights, leadership of the
Congress to set the nation's agenda.

Dave's campaign is nearing the threshold for support from the
Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee [DCCC]. Please contribute
now @ www.frankerforcongress.com or by mail to: Franker for Congress
Box 587 North Liberty, Iowa 52317. Don't forget: in the event of an
Electoral College tie at 269-269, the new U.S. House of Representatives
would select the new president. Leach, a vote for Bush-Cheney. Franker,
a vote for Kerry-Edwards.

Gearing up for GOTV

From: "Sarah Swisher"

Dear Friends:

After a phenomenal turnout for our absentee ballot training (149!!),
Johnson County is preparing to reap a record number of Democratic
votes. All total in 2000, in itself a record breaking year, 2,852
Democrats voted by mail. In 2004 Johnson County volunteers and our
amazing canvass team have generated well over 5,000 ballot request
forms from Democrats.

We will be asking you all to help make Johnson County a huge success
for John Kerry and the rest of our ticket. A big win in Johnson County
can put John Kerry over the top in Iowa and that, as we have all been
hearing, will make a difference in the nation.

I am honored that the Coordinated Campaign and the John Kerry Team have
asked me, as Chair of the Johnson County Democrats, to be their “Get
Out the Vote” chair for Johnson County. Let me be clear that this is a
voluntary position and the lions’ share of the work, as always, is
shouldered by all of our great volunteers, precinct captains, staff and
officers of the county party.

Democrats will still receive, probably frequently, communication from
our talented local staff: Megan Heneke, Rod Sullivan and Jeff Duttan.
But you may, on occasion, receive a call or request from me. I also
want to assist the staff by asking that if you have concerns or
questions like “where is my yard sign?” or “why can’t I get an open
phone line at headquarters?” that you give me call. All executive
committee communication with the Coordinated Campaign should funnel
through me as well. Now, of course, everyone should feel free to
“RSVP” or ask Megan or anyone routine questions about the program.
Likewise, please send any emails that go beyond routine campaign
business to me at seiusarah@msn.com.

Thank you to you all for helping us set this fantastic record! My cell
phone number is 319-530-8364 (please don’t call after 10PM or before
8AM). Now, lets get those ballots in and sign up for our (newly named)
neighbor to neighbor program to help legislative candidates around
Eastern Iowa!

In Solidarity
Sarah Swisher
Chair, Johnson County Democrats

PS: I will be keeping office hours at headquarters beginning tomorrow
and through election day.

Sunday Noon to 2 PM
Monday 2-4PM
Wednesday 4-6PM
Friday 11-1PM

Central Committee and Precinct leaders

From: Rod Sullivan

Precinct Leaders vs. Central Committee Members

There have been several discussions as to the similarities and
differences
between "Precinct Leaders" and Central Committee members. This E-mail is
intended to address this issue.

First, Central Committee. The Central Committee is the governing body
of the
County Democratic Party. Each precinct elects two people at Caucus to
represent that precinct for the next 4 years. (The Central Committee may
vote to fill its vacancies when there is no Caucus; many Central
Committee
members were elected at other times.)

The duties of a Central Committee Member include:

* Coordinate with other leaders in her precinct.
* Contact registered Dems in her precinct and introduce herself. Ask
these
folks to vote early, serve as volunteers, etc.
* Serve as a liaison between the IDP, JC Dems, and voters in her
precinct.
* Help with absentee requests within her precinct, and later assist with
ballot chasing within her precinct.
* Register voters within her precinct.
* Help put out yard signs and deliver newsletters within her precinct.
* Attend meetings and trainings.
* Assist with satellite GOTV efforts.
* Assist with Election Day GOTV efforts. (Arranging poll watchers,
callers,
knockers, drivers, etc.)
* Perform other duties as needed.

This sounds like a big job, and it is. But no one is in this alone. You
have
staff support, and many wonderful Democrats in all 57 Johnson County
precincts.

Obviously, every precinct is different; the job of Central Committee
member
will vary slightly from precinct to precinct. The above is just a
start- we
hope it helps!

If this looks familiar, it is because I recently put forth the same
list of
duties for Precinct Leaders. There are only a couple of differences;
these
differences are important, however.

Central Committee members, by virtue of having been elected, are
officials
of the Party. As such, they can introduce motions and vote on matters at
Central Committee meetings. Precinct Leaders (like all Democrats) are
not
only welcome at Central Committee meetings, but encouraged to attend.

Precinct Leader is an unofficial term for the person or persons who have
agreed to do this same work, despite not having been elected.

So if we have Central Committee members, why do we need Precinct
Leaders?
There are several reasons for this.

First, some precincts are so large that the Central Committee members
need
help.
Secondly, some precincts have a wealth of volunteers.
Thirdly, there are some vacancies on the Central Committee.
Fourth, some Central Committee members are unable or unwilling to
fulfill
their duties.
Finally, some Central Committee members are unwilling to sign the IDP
pledge
form.

I hope this has helped to clear up some of the many questions we have
fielded on this topic. I encourage each of you to not only continue to
volunteer, but also to learn as much as possible about the Democratic
Party
and its structure and function. The health and strength of the Party
depends
upon having people involved.

Thanks, and Go Dems!

---Rod

Yard Signs

From: Rod Sullivan

Yard Sign Distribution

Yard signs will be available Saturday, September 25, at 9:30 AM at
Democratic Headquarters, second floor, Old Capitol Mall.

We need individuals from each precinct to stop by, pick up the signs and
lists for their precincts, and spend the weekend putting them out.

No precinct has more than about 40 locations; most have around 20. 40
locations could amount to almost 200 signs, however, so be prepared.

Please contact Rod Sullivan at rodsullivan@mchsi.com with questions.

Thanks, and Go Dems!

Duties of precinct leaders

From: Rod Sullivan

We have had a few questions regarding the actual duties of Precinct Leaders.
The following list, while not exclusive, should give you some ideas. As
always, feel free to contact staff at 337-VOTE with questions, comments, or
concerns.

folks to vote early, serve as volunteers, etc.
* Serve as a liaison between the IDP, JC Dems, and voters in her precinct.
* Help with absentee requests within her precinct, and later assist with

"We cannot walk alone. And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall
march ahead. We cannot turn back. There are those who are asking the

satisfied as long as [a person's] basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to
