Franker/Leach debate, IPTV, 10/3, noon

From: Franker for Congress Campaign

Franker Debates Leach on IPTV Sunday, October 3, 12 noon

2nd district Democratic Congressional candidate Dave Franker's 2nd
debate with Republican Rep. Jim Leach took place at the Iowa Public
Television studio in Johnston on Friday, October 1.

It played on statewide IPTV Friday evening and will replay again on
Sunday, October 3, at 12 noon.

During the debate Dave advocated for 21st century jobs with affordable
health care, respect for seniors and Veterans in deeds and not just
words, and for no more labeling of Iowa schools and teachers as
failures.

Leach continued to repeat his self-described "moderate" approach, but
again declined to mention any specific initiative that he might have in
mind for the 2nd district in his hoped-for 15th term.

In international affairs Dave again asked Leach to join him in calling
for Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld's resignation as a first step
towards the restoration of America's standing in the world. Leach
refused, as he has on other occasions.

If you would like a copy of either debate ($10 to cover copying,
materials and postage) please send an email to
info@frankerforcongress.com or call 319-337-9396.

Owen for Iowans news/ Kerry in Cedar County

From: "Owen for Iowans"

OWEN for Iowans
Mike Owen / Democrat for State Representative
District 79 / Cedar, Johnson, Muscatine Counties

Sept. 30, 2004

Senator Kerry is Coming to Cedar County!

Great news, less than five weeks from the finish!  Sen. John Kerry will
bring his presidential campaign back to Cedar County next week.

The senator is scheduled to speak at Tipton Middle School in the
morning of Tuesday, Oct. 5.  Doors will open at 7:30 a.m., and details
will be forthcoming about the time of the actual program.

Free tickets will be required for this event and will be made
available in several locations in the area.  We will help spread the
word as soon as we know the locations.

Stay tuned for more details!

It's OUR message, and OUR commitment

Excellent schools.
Better-paying jobs.
Affordable health care.

Everyone talks about this stuff at election time.  But as the record
of the current Legislature shows us, not everyone works on those issues
once they're in office.  The difference in this election?  We mean it
when we talk about those issues.  We will join words with deeds.  Give
us a chance - you've seen for a decade what those in control will do.

We offer a positive alternative that will protect local control of our
schools, cities and counties, and bring all Iowans into the loop on
policies toward education, economic development and health care.  We
need to hold the door open, because public policy is public business.

This isn't rocket science, folks.  Keep the same leadership in the
Legislature, and nothing will change.  Regardless of their
election-year promises, they choose different priorities in office.  If
they win this seat, they have a better chance to hold control.  It's
going to be close.

A Legislature driven by the ideology of a few of its leaders cannot
work for all Iowans.  It's time for a Legislature that makes decisions
on the facts, openly, across party lines.

Don't Take the Bait

I think all of us are fed up with negative campaigns.  I am committed
to staying positive, not just about the campaign, but about Iowa's
future.  I am interested in your concerns, not political fighting
between people trying to boost their resumes.  This isn't a sports
event.  It's serious business.

Please, if you hear of negative things directed toward our campaign,
do three things:
-    Let us know;
-    Stick to the facts; and
-    Stay positive.

If you or someone you know has a question about any issue or something
heard on the street, just give me a call.  If I am elected as your
state representative, I'll expect those calls.  Please give me the
practice!

Also, there is information available on our website
, and through some independent surveys -
the best are done usually through the general news media. Here's a link
to my response to the Cedar Rapids Gazette survey:
.  Even
the media surveys, however, sometimes offer only a limited way to
respond to a complex question.  If you don't understand anything about
my responses, please let me know.  I'd be glad to talk about it.

I would appreciate your vote on November 2nd.  Remember, Mike Owen
will listen, and Mike Owen will work across party lines.  Isn't it
about time for a change?

One More

Our district is recognized around the state as a key battleground for
control of the Iowa House.  And, as you might have seen in Tuesday's
Des Moines Register, columnist David Yepsen wrote that our campaign "is
the best chance for a Democratic pickup" of an open seat in the Iowa
House.  I have thanked Mr. Yepsen for putting a target on us!

That will mean a continued flow of money to the other side, because
control of this seat is vital to their control of the House.  If you
have thought about a contribution to our campaign and haven't gotten
around to it, we could use the help now!  A contribution of $25, $50,
$100 - whatever you can afford or consider appropriate - is welcome and
will help us spread our message.

Thank you to everyone who has helped us get to this point.  If you can
pitch in, let us know.  It will be a tight battle from here on out.
Let's keep it positive!  Let's not only be happy with a victory on
November 2, but happy with the way we did it, too!

Des Moines, anyone?

From: Rod Sullivan
Dear Fellow Democrats:

There are a few large Kerry signs in Des Moines that we can have here in
Johnson County. Problem is, we need someone to pick them up.

Do any of you know anyone who is going to and from Des Moines in a
truck or
van? If so, please ask if they would be willing to pick up these signs.

The person in charge of the signs is Matt De Franti, and he can be
reached
at 515-558-9580, extension #333. Please let him know if you can pick up
the
signs. Matt can give you the dimensions, etc.

Thanks, and Go Dems!

Truck needed

From: Rod Sullivan

Dear Fellow Dems:

We are urgently in need of a truck to pull our float in the Homecoming
Parade on Friday evening.

Mike Lehman from the Board of Supervisors has donated the use of his
hayrack; now we need something to pull it with.

It is a pretty standard hayrack, and Mike can change out the ball to fit
most any hitch.

The parade runs from 5:45 until about 7; we will need to have the float
hitched and ready to go by about 5.

Please contact Rod Sullivan at 354-7199 or rodsullivan@mchsi.com if you
have
a vehicle we can use.

Thanks!
