Remember that the Iowa City City Council primary election is this coming Tuesday, October 11. Turnout in these elections is often very low, so every vote matters! Several of the candidates have responded to the JC Democrats questionnaire, and their responses are posted on the website at http://www.jcdems.org. John Kerry will be attending a Johnson County Democrats grassroots organizing meeting on Sunday, October 9th in Iowa City. The meeting will be from 3pm to 5pm at Elizabeth Tate High School, 1528 Mall Drive.
Special invitations go to the volunteers who made our record breaking Democratic turnout in 04 possible and to our progressive partners in the 49, FAIR!, the Rapid Response team, Electing Progressive Women, and our own A-Team. We will be presenting information on precinct organizing and 06 caucus preparation and then will be joined by Sen. Kerry who will share his insight on both issues and party building.

FCC Meeting October 5

Make your voice heard!
The Town Meeting on the Future of Media in Iowa City is on October 5 less than a week away. Its crucial that you attend this forum to tell the FCC exactly how media consolidation affects you and your community. FCC Commissioners Jonathan Adelstein and Michael Copps will be present to listen to your comments, as will members of local media outlets and grassroots organizations. The forum is your chance to testify before the FCC all comments will be recorded and entered into the official public record to be considered when the FCC again takes up the ownership issue this fall.

Attend a workshop prior to the hearing to learn how media policy affects ownership, content, and the information we need to participate in democracy. These workshops will give you the chance to consider your own hopes for media that meet your community's needs, and to prepare a 2 minute testimony to present to the Commissioners at the forum.
All Workshops are free and open to the public.

Background: The FCC is about to re-consider broadcast ownership rules the same rules they tried to weaken in 2003, only to be rebuffed by the public and the courts. The agencys chairman will probably try once again to weaken the rules, allowing media companies to gobble up even more local outlets. As FCC Commissioner Michael Copps has said, Those awful rules that an FCC majority passed two years ago to loosen our media protections have been sent back to us by the courts. The bad news is they were sent back to the very same folks who dreamed them up in the first place. They screwed it up once. Believe me, theyre 100% capable of screwing it up again.
Dont let them screw it up again! Come to the Town Meeting on the Future of Media in Iowa City on October 5 and make your voice heard!
