Art Small

From: Rod Sullivan

Dear Democratic Friends:

I would like to point out an unsung hero of the 2004 election cycle.

Art Small did what none of the “big names” would do, and took on Chuck
Grassley. Art Small stepped up. This forced Grassley to spend his war
chest.

In taking on Grassley, Art took a financial risk. As you may have seen,
Art
& Mary Jo are faced with $50,000 in campaign debt. Unless their
supporters
raise the money, this will come from their savings.

We should not let this happen. I want to suggest one last Small for
Senate
event. Let’s follow Art’s inspirational lead and step up. Tell every
Democrat you know, statewide, to write one last check.

In about 2 months, the “big names” will come calling. They will want
you to
fund their races for Governor, Congress, and the like. Before you write
those checks, remember who stepped up. Remember Art and Mary Jo.

Sincerely,

Rod Sullivan

A message from the Franker campaign

From: Jeff Walberg

A message from Jeff Walberg, Treasurer, Franker for Congress

Dear Johnson County Democrats,

Although the elections didn't turn out as I would have liked, I'm proud
to
have been a part of Dave Franker's run for Congress. Dave embodied a
strong
sense of principles and a tireless work ethic that I found not only
admirable but inspirational.

Many of you supported Dave during the campaign and we thank you for
contributions. I'm writing now because we need your help one last time
as
we close out our campaign. Despite our best efforts the campaign is
left
with a small amount of debt -- roughly $3000.

Are there 100 Johnson County Democrats who are willing to help retire
the
modest debt of Franker For Congress with $30 each? Please help conclude
Dave's tremendous effort by offering your support to:

Franker for Congress, Box 587 North Liberty, Iowa 52317

If you're not sure you're ready to give more money, please consider:

1. Due to Hatch Act stipulations, Dave had to resign (not just take a
leave
of absence) from his 16 year appointment as a VA chaplain in order to
run
for federal office. For 16 years Dave visited Iowa's sick and elderly
Veterans in the late afternoon after he had taught school all day. Dave
also
was on call on weekends from Friday evening through Sunday morning
virtually
every weekend for 16 years. From September 23, 2003, the day he
announced,
through November 2, 2004, Dave forfeited over $23,000 in salary by
taking a
stand for progressive politics in Johnson County and running for
Congress to
represent us.

2. Dave traveled the district tirelessly for 19 months. He logged over
37,000 miles for the campaign -- and never submitted one bill for
reiumbursement of automobile travel expenses.

3. While Jim Leach raised $344,000 of his $466,000 by a) writing his
campaign a check for $186,000, b) raising $35,000 by flying in Dick
Cheney
for a one night stand and c) gathering de facto PAC money with 167
corporate
executives donating $123,000 (through 10/11/04), Dave actually had MORE
2nd
district Iowans contribute to his campaign than Leach did to his. The
most
common contribution to Franker for Congress was $25, followed by $50 -
both
numbering in the several hundreds.

4. Franker for Congress raised over $103,000 overall - and has
outstanding
bills of only $3,000 - due to an actual-contributions-to-pledge ratio of
slightly less than 100% in the last weeks of the campaign.

5. Unlike the incumbent Congressman, Dave spoke openly, clearly and
without
ambiguous parsing for: women's reproductive rights, gay rights,
protection
of social security, development of renewable energy and withdrawal from
Iraq
- and did so whether he was in Johnson County or rural southern Iowa -
the
REAL meaning of integrity.

Thank you for your consideration and for all your work during this
election
cycle.

Sincerely,
Jeff Walberg, Treasurer
Franker For Congress
